Your chance to make history for our oceans!
Did you know that right now our federal environment minister Tony Burke
is making one of the biggest decisions in our conservation history?
That he’s deciding on the location, size and quality of a network
of marine reserves right around Australia.
It could be the world’s biggest, and most effective marine national
park network, setting an important precedent globally, and
helping restore the ocean’s health and biodiversity.
Or it could be another disappointment.
In light of UNESCO’s scathing report this week on the threats to
the Great Barrier Reef, and fragile coral atolls off WA being put at risk
by new oil and gas proposals, this move has never been more important.
They need your help!
What you can do to stand up for our oceans
There is a risk that the government will fail to set aside enough parks
in the places they’re needed; such as where our underwater wildlife
feeds and breeds.
Currently less than 1% of the five precious marine regions being
considered for reserves are highly protected.
It’s critical to ensure that this final decision is the right decision.
Want to help? Here are some simple things you can do right now
to stand up for your oceans:
- Tweet Prime Minister Gillard @JuliaGillard and/or Minister @Tony_Burke
and tell them why you want them to #pushtheboundaries of
our marine nationalparks
- Forward this information through your social networks to your friends,
family and contacts and encourage them to stand up for their oceans
